RSA: Hotspot Security Improving

Posted by Sam Churchill on October 27th, 2008

Today, RSA announced the results of its annual Wireless Security Survey, which looks at the measures companies and individuals are taking – or not taking – to ensure that their wireless networks are secure.

One of RSA’s security experts recently trolled the streets of NYC, London and Paris to quantify the growth in wireless networking (both corporate and in-home) and to determine how secure these networks are. RSA says the results demonstrate how the cities have evolved over the years, where the wide-open security gaps are, as well as some fascinating geographical disparities. Highlights of the study include:

  • Growth of Access Point (AP) Adoption — Paris is leading the way with access point growth jumping 543% to 4,481 since 2007 – London (the leader in sheer AP volume), jumped 72% while New York increased 45%.
  • Advanced Security — Security continues to improve globally with Paris showing that 72% of all access points had advanced security. New York and London came in at 49% and 48% respectively
  • Security of Business Access Points — 20% of London’s business access points are completely unprotected by any form of wireless encryption – down from 19% in 2007. While New York and Paris fair much better with only 3% of unprotected business access points in New York and 6% in Paris
  • Security of Home Access Points – Home users are a bit more security savvy, Paris leads the way with 98% of home access points being encrypted – New York and London were close behind with 97% and 90% respectively

With Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) - the original wireless encryption standard - now discredited, the 2008 survey paid close attention to the types of encryption in-play, including Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) or WPA2. The WPA2 certification mark indicates compliance with an advanced protocol that implements the full 802.11i standard. Paris once again led the way, with 72% of access points (excluding public hotspots) found to be using advanced security.

Network World set up the largest public 802.11n test ever conducted. They invited all enterprise Wi-Fi vendors to supply eight 802.11n access points, along with controllers if needed. Four vendors took them up on the challenge: Aerohive, Bluesocket, Motorola and Siemens.

Motorola Goes Android

Motorola Goes Android

Posted by Sam Churchill on October 29th, 2008

Motorola’s co-chief executive, Sanjay Jha, who heads the mobile devices business, has decided to focus on Google’s Android software for many new phones, the WSJ reported today.

Details of the plan, which could include thousands of layoffs, could be announced Thursday, when the company reports its results, the paper said. Motorola is expected to build mid-tier devices, which account for most of its sales, around Android.

Meanwhile, business-focused devices will be based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and the company will use its own platform, P2K, for low-end phones. The company is also seeking to outsource production of some Windows Mobile phones, the paper reported.

According to the NY Times, the current downturn is impacting every handset maker in the business. It is a downturn that is going to be equally hard for Motorola, since it doesn’t have any hit phones for this holiday season, which means it will keep ceding market share to the likes of Apple, RIM and Nokia.

The top 10 Most Popular U.S. Handsets in September include, (1) the RIM Blackberry Curve (26%), (2) Apple iPhone (9.2%) and (3) LG Dare, at 7.9% of the market.

Nielsen says the U.S. has 26M Smartphone subscribers out of the 260M cellular subscribers.

RCR Wireless News profiles Rich Miner, the general manager of Google’s Mobile Platforms business and the founder of Android, the startup that Google acquired three years ago:

Miner, a 15-year veteran of the wireless industry, said Android rose from the ashes of his tenure at European operator Orange, which was the first carrier in the world to launch a cellphone running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software. Although the launch propelled Orange onto the international scene as a maverick in the mobile space, Miner said the lessons he learned from the event pushed him to found Android.

“It became clear to me that there were fundamental things that needed fixing in the mobile industry,” he said.

Despite being Microsoft’s only Windows Mobile customer, “we were still dictated terms as to what we could and couldn’t do” with the software. Miner indicated that Microsoft made it clear that Windows Mobile was a Microsoft product and not an Orange product.

Further, after the launch, Miner said Orange wanted to add push-to-talk capabilities to the phone, but discovered a glitch in Microsoft’s platform that wouldn’t allow the carrier to add the service. Microsoft agreed to rectify the issue, Miner said, but advised it would take 18 months to do so. And since the platform was not open to others, neither Orange nor the manufacturer (HTC Corp.) could modify it.

Miner said Google’s Android promises a different approach. Google helped develop the platform using “best-in-class solutions,” and, as of yesterday, made it free and open to anyone. This, Miner said, will allows anyone — individuals, businesses, handset makers and carriers — to develop Android services and applications via full access to the platform, from the bottom on up.

“No one party completely controls that platform and that software stack,” Miner said. “Each component can be mashed up with other components.”

Members of Android’s Open Handset Alliance include, Kyocera Wireless, HTC, Motorola, Samsung Electronics, Sprint Nextel as well as China Mobile, KDDI and NTT DoCoMo.

MIMO

MIMO: Less — and More

Posted by Sam Churchill on October 29th, 2008

RF Design Line has added a tutorial; Understanding 802.11n.

When a system needs to support multiple users, “multiple access” techniques must be used to divide the communications resources. There are several standard techniques commonly used for multiple access. The first technique uses time division multiple access (TDMA), where all users share the same frequency, but each user listens or talks at a different time. This technique is commonly used in 802.11g radios.

A second technique is to share the frequency. Here, multiple users listen or talk at the same time, but use different frequencies. The third technique uses orthogonal codes to separate multiple users. Here, users use the same frequency at the same time, but special coding is used to separate the multiple users.

802.11n departs from the time, frequency, or code division schemes that came before it; this protocol aims to send data at the same time on the same frequency.

Normally, these signals would interfere with each other. However, 802.11n can take advantage of a concept called “spatial diversity,” which separates the data streams by using multiple antennas.

Spatial diversity uses multiple paths (and ironically, multipath was previously an impairment) to effectively increase throughput. Thus, it is ideal for the cluttered indoor and urban environment. The name given to this technology is MIMO, which stands for multiple-input, multiple-output. Because MIMO systems use multiple radios to achieve higher throughput, these systems can consume more power and have more circuitry compared with single radio (SISO) 802.11g systems.

Atheros says it has a simpler approach to 802.11n — by eliminating MIMO.

Atheros wants to drive 802.11n into mainstream Wi-Fi markets with a new line of chips using a streamlined version of the 802.11n specification, says EE Times. The Atheros Align family uses only a single antenna to target 11g price points.

By stripping out support for multiple radios, Atheros is betting it can create a new class of higher volume 11n devices that hit the estimated $3-5 pricing of 11g parts but deliver better performance, explains EE Times. The Atheros AR9285 single-chip PCI Express (PCIe) solution targets the growing value PC market segment consisting of sub-$500 notebook and netbook products.

On the other hand, Quantenna (right), puts 4×4 MIMO On a Chip, enabling faster speeds that support high definition video on home Wi-Fi systems.

The Wi-Fi Alliance is hoping to work out a solution that lets users mix and match different variants of 802.11n. The IEEE’s TASK GROUP N now anticipates publication in November 2009.

T-Mobile Android Unlocked

T-Mobile Android: Unlocked

Posted by Sam Churchill on October 29th, 2008

Engadget says T-Mobile’s G1 is now anyone’s game.

Thanks to the kids over at Unlock T-Mobile G1, any owner with a few spare moments and $22.99 can open their handset up for use on AT&T or any other GSM network across the globe.

Prospective unlockers simply hand over the aforementioned cash and their IMEI code (scary, we know), and in return they receive an eight-digit unlock code that frees it from the bonds of T-Mobile.

According to AndroidCommunity.com, initial tests have shown that calling and texting work just fine on non-native networks, but the inability to even login to Gmail (and thus, the Android Market, etc.) puts a real damper on things.

In other news, The AndroidGuys say that OpenMoko is working with the Android platform and hope to have Blogger: for bored mindz - Create Postsomething operational as soon as November.

OpenMoko is available in the Neo 1973 (made by FIC) and can also run the Qtopia platform. OpenMoko is named after the inventor of the mobile phone, Martin Cooper.

Oprah calls Kindle "her new favorite thing," gives everyone $50 off

Been waiting patiently for the next-generation Kindle(s) to hit the market? Growing increasingly frustrated with the wait? Thanks to the Amazon e-reader becoming Oprah Winfrey's "new favorite, favorite thing in the world (can't you see the jubilation on her face?)," you might just have to finally pull the trigger on the existing iteration. As a special offer for Oprah Show viewers (and by extension, everyone who reads this post), Amazon.com is now offering $50 off of the Kindle's $359 price tag by simply entering the code OPRAHWINFREY at checkout and envisioning Tom Cruise leaping on your computer desk. Better act fast, though -- the offer's only good through November 1st, and yes, that Tom Cruise bit is required.

HTC expected to move 600,000 G1's

HTC CEO expects to move 600,000 G1s this year, more in 2009

With all sorts of outlandish figures being bandied about regarding sales / expectations for the T-Mobile G1, someone intimately close to the situation has finally chimed in with his take. Peter Chou, chief executive and co-founder of HTC, stated in a recent interview that it expects to ship over 600,000 G1s this year, and while he wouldn't come clean on an exact figure for 2009, he did proclaim that "in general, we think we can do more next year." We aren't betting the farm that his prediction will come true or anything, but it certainly falls within the realm of feasibility. Oh, and if you were wondering how Mr. Chou planned on convincing potential iPhone buyers to opt for the G1 instead, he reckons that the full QWERTY keypad will handle that for him -- after all, "Americans are very keyboard-oriented."

10" mini HP

10-inch Mini 1000 appears on HP website

HP's obviously getting ready to expand its netbook line beyond the well-received Mini-Note 2133 -- the company recently started teasing the Vivienne Tam Digital Clutch, and now images and pricing for a for a "Mini 1000" have appeared on the HP shopping site. As expected, the new rig is basically a non-glam version of the Digital Clutch, and specs appear to be right in line with what we've seen: 10-inch screen, sub-1-inch thickness, and 2.25-pound starting weight -- and we're guessing the Mini 1000 also gets the upgrade to an Intel Atom over the 2133's VIA C7-M. Not bad at all for a starting price tag of $399 -- hopefully we'll find out a lot more soon.

Portable VSAT and WiMAX

Portable VSAT Does WiMAX

Posted by Sam Churchill on October 16th, 2008

Satellite-enabled WiMAX is a strategic extension of our core capabilities,” said Dr. Amiee Chan, president and CEO, of Norsat, a leading provider of portable satellite systems.

Norsat plans to leverage its satellite communication expertise and work with telecommunications operators and other partners to provide end-to-end satellite-enabled WiMAX networks for voice, data and video. These solutions are expected to include: base stations, voice, data and video content servers, operations support systems, satellite backhaul solutions and satellite capacity.

“We believe by partnering with players in the WiMAX space, we will be well positioned to establish a strong foothold in this burgeoning market,” explained Chan.

“Approximately 3 billion people now use mobile phones, but only 400 million have a high speed internet connection,” Dr. Chan added. “We believe the launch of this business unit will introduce new revenue streams, help drive our push into the commercial market segment and further extend our global reach.”

The Washington Post asks, Is The Timing Right for WiMax? Yes and No.

In related news, the Department of Defense this week is hosting a demonstration of sustainable and renewable energy options for disaster relief and humanitarian assistance.

The project is called STAR-TIDES (Sustainable Technologies, Accelerated Research-Transportable Infrastructures for Development and Emergency Support). The idea is to pull together cheap and effective solutions for humanitarian emergencies or post-war reconstruction.

Their solution looks like two 40 watt Polycrystalline panels (80 watts at $600) plus a 200 watt wind turbine ($700). The panels might deliver a total of 5 amps for an average of 4 hrs per day, or 20 amp/hours total. That should charge a 45 amp/hr Optima Yellow Top 12 volt battery ($200) about half-way. A mobile router (WiFi locally/WiMAX backhaul) draws about 1 amp at 12 volts. It would discharge the battery about half way (operating 24 hrs/day). The wind turbine provides backup. The whole thing might cost around $2000.

A $150 Motorola CPEi 150 WiMAX modem (below, left) utilized Portland’s WiMAX network this summer. It connected to a a $200 Meraki outdoor WiFi access point (below right). A modified Power Over Ethernet system (12-24 volts is used on the Meraki instead of the standard 48 volts), which made the system even simpler to assemble.

Mike Boyd spliced the 12 volts (powering the WiMAX modem) onto the CAT-5 cable that connected and powered the 200mW Outdoor Meraki. Bingo. The two devices (combined) drew a remarkably low .7 amps at 12 volts. A car battery might have run it continuously for two days.

Motorola's Android

Motorola’s Android: 2nd Quarter 09

Posted by Sam Churchill on October 20th, 2008

Motorola has been showing spec sheets and images of their Android phone to carriers around the world in the past two months, says Business Week, and is likely to introduce the handset in the U.S. sometime in the second quarter of 2009.

It takes some of the design cues from Motorola’s Krave ZN4 (right), the first touch-screen phone from Motorola. It was launched with Verizon Wireless on Oct. 14, but it’s not certain whether the Android phone screen will feature Krave’s distinctive clear flip screen. The Android handset will feature a touch screen about the size of those on the iPhone, people familiar with the phone say. Using Facebook and MySpace.com, the phone will let users message friends from phone contact lists and utilize the applications being developed around the Android platform.

The Washington Post explains; the G1 already imports your contacts from Gmail into the phone. It wouldn’t be too hard for the Motorola Android to import your friends’ list from Facebook or MySpace directly into the phone’s address book, and let you IM them and see their status updates and activity streams on your phone. Kind of like the Facebook app on the iPhone lets you do already, except that you wouldn’t necessarily need to launch a separate app.

“We’re excited about the innovation possibilities on Android and look forward to delivering great products in partnership with Google”, said the company in a statement. Motorola hopes to revive a loss-making handset division that has forfeited market share and their stock is hovering near a 16-year low.

Wednesday is G-Day. On Oct. 22, T-Mobile and Google make the G1 official. The T-Mobile G1, made by HTC, is only the first Android phone (wikipedia). Sprint and others are expected to have their own versions in the coming months.

UFO insight

Oct. 14 arrives! Humans ready for UFO insight?

Steve Hammons
October 14, 2008
This article originally appeared on the Joint Recon Study Group site.)

The claim by Australian author, performer and alleged psychic Blossom Goodchild that a large UFO will make itself visible to the public and TV cameras today and for 72 hours has many people wondering.

Some people wonder if this might really take place.

Some people apparently wonder how others can be so gullible and stupid to believe such a story.

Some might wonder if this is going to damage the reputation of legitimate research into the topic of extraterrestrial and/or extra-dimensional visitation to Earth.

We might also ask how this prediction by Goodchild might affect the overall "acclimation" or preparedness of people about the possibility of ET visitation to Earth, whether anything unusual happens today or not.

After all, even if nothing happens in the next 72 hours along these lines, it certainly seems possible that some day there might be more open and overt developments regarding the UFO situation.

FRIEND OR FOE?

Goodchild's alleged telepathic messages from the "Federation of Light" include the information that they come in love, peace and light to help the human race move forward and upward, she says.

That seems all well and good.

However, there are also theories in the field of research on UFOs that might cause us to moderate our enthusiasm.

Some researchers have indicated that there may be more than one type of being and culture visiting Earth. There could be several species and civilizations.

According to some views, there may be very different motives on the part of different visitors. Some may have goodwill toward humanity. Others might not.

Some visitors might be our friends and could help the human race take the next step in positive development. Others might have hostile or destructive motives toward humanity.

Some might be neutral and are simply observing. They may not have an interest in getting involved with Earth and the human race one way or the other.

Like the alliances, differing agendas, diplomacy, espionage and intelligence-gathering among nations on Earth, there could be the same kinds of factors involved in the case of extraterrestrial cultures and civilizations.

The situation may be complex.

This complexity could be one explanation for the alleged government security surrounding the extraterrestrial visitation topic. If we are in the middle of a sophisticated milieu of interplanetary and inter-dimensional alliances and espionage, similar to our own conventional international scenario, then things may not be as simple as some would like to believe.

And the term "visitors" might not be totally accurate. Some researchers theorize that the involvement of extraterrestrial and/or extra-dimensional beings has gone far beyond "visiting." There may be many types of significant activities underway by them, possibly over a long period of time.

PERCEPTION AND UNDERSTANDING

The prediction by Goodchild does seem to focus our attention on several interesting elements.

As noted, it brings to mind the possibility that one day we might see an extraterrestrial space craft on the TV news. This would certainly change our viewpoints and our orientation in important ways.

The message Goodchild says she received also notes that humans and Earth are under a burden of dark forces of some kind. It doesn't take much imagination to agree that the human race and Earth do seem to face challenges that are consistent with this idea.

Some observers have also pointed out that Goodchild's prediction reflects our need to be rescued from outside forces. Maybe this is because we have given up on our own ability to make the world a better place and transcend the serious problems on Earth. There may be good reason to believe that humanity is unable to lift itself up without help from outside.

Goodchild's message seems to imply that there truly is a larger force for good in the Universe and that this force is organized and intelligent. That is consistent with the spiritual beliefs of many people. And, it is comforting. It might also be true.

Her message also makes mention of our "souls." That is, part of our being and consciousness is deeply rooted in a spiritual reality.

As to the idea that people can receive messages via telepathy, ESP or other kinds of "anomalous cognition," a solid body of research indicates that these phenomena are possible or even probable. ESP may be a natural "sixth sense" that humans, and probably many animals, have as part of our natural abilities of perception and understanding.

So, during this 72-hour period when Goodchild claims that a large UFO will make itself apparent to humanity, we can ponder the possibilities, look closely at the human race and search our hearts and minds for any insight about what the future might bring.

FCC in your town

FCC Commissioners: Coming to Your Town

Posted by Sam Churchill on October 20th, 2008

FCC Commissioners may be in your town this week for their DTV Outreach program.

The FCC identified target television markets for specific DTV outreach, including all those markets in which more than 100,000 households or at least 15% of the households rely solely on over-the-air signals for television reception.

The five FCC Commissioners and senior Commission staff will visit these and other markets to raise awareness and educate consumers in the days leading up to the DTV transition on February 17, 2009.

Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein will be in Portland today, Monday Oct 20th, for two public town halls on the DTV transition:

  • WHEN:
    October 20, 12:15-1 PM
  • WHERE:Urban League Multi-Cultural Senior Center
    5325 NE MLK Blvd.
    Portland, OR 97211
  • WHEN:
    October 20, 2-3:30 PM
  • WHERE:
    Native American Cultural Center
    Portland State University
    710 SW Jackson Street
    Portland, OR 97201

Now’s your chance to bend their ear.

The FCC wants to auction the 2155-2180 MHZ band to the highest bidder. I think that’s a big mistake. Municipal wireless — using 2150 Mhz — would be faster, cheaper and more reliable than WiFi. Practical, even.

The range of 2150 Mhz WiMAX averages 3.5 miles (similar to 2.6 Mhz WiMAX), so each antenna tower might cover 10 sq miles. A 100 sq mile city might only need 10 towers. Each tower might require about $50K in gear, or $500K total.

Municipal WiFi networks typically costs $100K+ per sq mile ($10M per 100 sq mi.), requiring 30-40 nodes per sq mile, plus lots of backhaul gear. Ten million dollars vrs $500K. Which do you think is more likely to deliver cheap or “free” broadband to the home?

This new 25 MHz-wide band should be lightly regulated - like 3650 MHz - and dedicated to municipal wireless coverage. But 2150 won’t be “free” if the FCC “taxes” it.

Adelstein is the most sympathetic to digital divide issues of all the commissioners. I think 2150 Mhz should be dedicated to Municipal Broadband - defined as covering perhaps 80% of a city.

That band should be free — like WiFi. Like Radio. Like Television.

ATSC is a lost cause. Furgetaboutit. The NAB has nobody to blame but their own “leadership”.

Iraq Vet Attacked

Iraqi Vets Trampled by Police at Debate

Vet's eyewitness account

Lucy Herschel and Hannah Wolfe report on how police met antiwar dissent with batons and horses at the last presidential debate in New York.

WHILE BARACK Obama and John McCain were getting makeup touchups for their Wednesday night debate at Hofstra University, in Hempstead, N.Y., police outside made sure that the voices of antiwar veterans wouldn't be heard.

Officers of the Nassau County Police Department reacted with reckless violence to a protest organized by Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) outside the debate site. Among several people injured in the assault, former Army Sgt. Nick Morgan was knocked unconscious and his cheekbone broken when he was trampled by a police horse.

"We were there to force the issue that the leaders of this nation are not listening to or are not caring about veterans," said IVAW member Matthis Chiroux, who was among several veterans and activists arrested. "And they couldn't have done a better job of proving us right. They stomped my friend Nick's face into Jell-o. I put this on both candidates, on the major press and on the Nassau County police."

The IVAW had sent a request to the debate moderator that they be allowed to ask their own questions of the candidates at the Hofstra event, but this was ignored--and so the third and final presidential debate passed without an antiwar voice being represented.

That night, IVAW organized a nonviolent demonstration to request entry into the debate. Marching in uniform and in formation, IVAW members led several hundred activists to an intersection in front of the Hofstra campus gates--where they were confronted by an army of mounted police and riot cops.

Ten IVAW members were arrested, apparently for no more than insisting on their right to be heard. Mounted police then pushed the crowd back onto the sidewalk, recklessly pulling their horses around and at times backing them into the crowd. The police continued to drive protesters back, pinning the crowd up against a fence.

Riot cops reached past the IVAW members at the front of the crowd, grabbing protesters behind them and dragging them into the street. A mounted cop leapt with his horse onto the sidewalk and trampled protesters, including Morgan.

Chiroux said the police took Morgan aside and bandaged him, but then placed him in a truck with other arrestees to go to processing and detention.

"He was incoherent, he couldn't even say his name," Chiroux said. "He had blood running down his face. We kept telling the police he needed immediate medical attention. One officer said, with a smirk, 'Get him to say it. He has to say it.' I said, 'He can't even talk!' The officer said, 'Tough luck.' Finally, we said, 'Nick, you have to say I need to go to the hospital.' We got him to say it, and they took him in."

Photobucket

CHIROUX SAID that while they were detained, he and his fellow IVAW members were verbally harassed by police. "They called us traitors, cowards, idiots," he said.

Three women IVAW members who had been arrested were handcuffed to a bench, and "the male officers kept coming closer to them, verbally sexually harassing them," Chiroux said. "One kept holding up Marlisa's ID to her face and saying, 'Wow, you look like you came out of a Barbie magazine.'"

Morgan was brought back from the hospital, still incoherent and in great pain. He was left chained to a bench for five hours without further medical attention, Chiroux said. IVAW members repeatedly asked officers for their names (they weren't wearing badges) or to contact lawyers--they were refused on all counts.

When most of the IVAW members were finally released at 2:30 a.m. (according to reports, one vet remained in custody as this report was written), they went, still in uniform, to a nearby diner--where the same group of cops who had detained them were eating.

Chiroux went up to them and asked again for their names. One officer "got up in my face," he said, "screaming and waving his finger at me and saying, 'I'm gonna kick your ass if you keep asking that.'"

The IVAW members say they wanted to ask Barak Obama if he would support soldiers who refuse to serve in Iraq, since in the past, he had called the Iraq war illegal. They also wanted to question John McCain about his votes to cut veterans benefits.

"Neither of the candidates have shown real support for soldiers and veterans," said Jason Lemieux, a former sergeant in the Marine Corps and a member of IVAW who served three tours in Iraq.

"We came here to try and get serious questions answered--questions that we, as veterans of the Iraq war, have a right to ask--but instead we were arrested. We believe that the time has come to end this war and bring our troops home, and we will be pushing for that no matter what happens in this election."

IVAW members thanked activists for coming to support the march and for enduring the police violence.

"For many of our members, this was their first protest," said Hannah Fleury of the Campus Antiwar Network, which mobilized chapters from as far away as Boston for this protest. "Now that we see what we're up against, we're going to fight even harder on our campuses to end the war, and to support the veterans."

The New York Civil Liberties Union is asking for an immediate investigation into the use of horses at the demonstration. "It is shocking that someone who served his country would be treated so disgracefully by the Nassau County Police Department," Tara Keenan-Thomson, director of the group's Nassau County chapter, said in a press release.

As Chiroux said, "Both candidates claim they support veterans. And this is how we got supported last night: by being pushed back, trampled and arrested.

"We demonstrated to the country and the world that democracy is not dead in the United States--that the people in the U.S. still ultimately hold the power. They can try to force our voices to be silent, to block us out of the media, but we won't let these people shut us down."

Bush Approved Enhanced Interrogation Techniques

Bush Approved Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (Torture)

When history is written about America in the Bush years it will be a dark chapter indeed. Particularly, as we uncover more and more terrible facts about how this President and this Administration have corrupted our Constitution and betrayed the principles that have made this nation so great.

It was revealed this week that President Bush gave written approval to the CIA to conduct torture.

Of course, they don't call it torture. They call them "Enhanced Interrogation Techniques." These techniques were so severe that according to an article in the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/14/AR2008101403331.html), the CIA desperately needed the written approval so they would not be prosecuted after engaging in this horrible and illegal conduct.

Let there be no mistake – from Guantanamo to Abu Ghraib – our country has approved behavior that has destroyed our moral standing in the world.

There is no doubt that our nation faces grave dangers, and we must respond aggressively to protect our nation and citizens. But our response cannot be to take repulsive actions that threaten the very morality of our nation.

This again is not a partisan issue. Both Presidential candidates have come out against torture. Awful things happen in war, and our soldiers must always be given the best tools and support to defend themselves. When mistakes are made, we must see behavior in the context of what they have been ordered to do.

But the systematic approval of torture, violating domestic and international law, must not be tolerated. Period. Relabeling torture as "enhanced interrogation" does not make it any less illegal.

That we would summarily walk away from our principles, established in law and proudly defended by our soldiers, speaks to a broader point: It is in our national interest – and indeed an issue of national security – to retain the higher moral ground. In the last eight years, our missteps and misdeeds made the world more dangerous for Americans, and the list of Allies willing to step into the fight against extremists significantly shorter.

For decades, we cultivated an image of America that defended the abused and downtrodden. Brave soldiers spilt their blood on the streets of Mogadishu, not to stop extremism, but to make sure those that were starving could get the food we sent them.

We expend billions of dollars to address humanitarian crisis around the globe. In some cases, we were more responsive to international disasters than we were to our own.

How, then – does the world reconcile that with an administration that would officially deny the basic human rights and due process that we advertise as part of the American ethos?

They can't - and we can't - until we address these crimes.

Please remind your member of Congress and the leadership that these issues are important to you.

Britain's Global Governance

Britain’s Prime Minister Argues for Global Governance

Written by Brian Farmer
Friday, 17 October 2008 15:58

In a Washington Post commentary published on Friday, October 17, Great Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown tried to make the case that "The Financial Crisis Is Also an Opportunity To Create New Rules for Our Global Economy," as the subtitle put it.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown meets with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Gordon Brown and Ban Ki-moon

This sounds almost odd, coming from the leader of a country that has historically been closer to the United States than to Europe and the rest of the world, which explains why Britain still does not have both feet in the European Union (EU). On the other hand, Mr. Brown has made it clear that he wants to drag Britain into the EU, without resorting to the earlier promised popular referendum.

Ironically, it was "new rules" that contributed mightily to the present financial crisis. Once upon a time, banks only lent money to people who were good credit risks, which meant that poor people did not often get mortgage loans. Since the poor in the United States are made up disproportionately of minorities, the media claimed that minorities were victims of discrimination. This led Congress to pass and President Jimmy Carter to sign The Community Reinvestment Act of 1977, which forced lending institutions to grant mortgages to people whose income, credit histories, and net worth would previously have disqualified them from getting such loans. Later, the Clinton administration put pressure on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to get involved, whereby they bought up weak loan portfolios from banks and securitized them for sale on world markets. The seeds of the subprime meltdown were planted by these policies.

Early on in his commentary, Brown describes the formation of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in glowing terms, saying of the "visionaries" who created them, "They knew that for prosperity to be sustained, it had to be shared." How the international economic order works under those two institutions is described in John Perkins’ book, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. Developing countries are convinced to accept enormous loans based on fraudulent financial reports. The money is funneled though multinational corporations, which build the infrastructure megaprojects. When the enormous projects don’t pan out and the loans cannot be repaid, the countries backing up the international lenders and multinational corporations demand their "pound of flesh," including access to natural resources, military cooperation, and political support. In the process, millions of poor are even further impoverished.

We now watch as the world’s largest financial institutions are being recapitalized with taxpayer money. The upshot is that the banking industry is being nationalized on a global scale. It was government interference that caused the problem and now we’ve been told that more government interference is the solution to the problem! It’s a classic example of what 19th-century French economist Frederic Bastiat referred to as "concocting the antidote and the poison in the same laboratory."

Brown ends his commentary by stating, "Over the past week, we have shown that with political will it is possible to agree on a global multibillion-dollar package to recapitalize our banks across many continents. In the next few weeks, we need to show the same resolve and spirit of cooperation to create the rules for our new global economy. If we do this, 2008 will be remembered not just as a year of financial crisis but as the year we started to build the world anew."

He apparently chose his words carefully, because that sounds somewhat less ominous than "build the New World Order."

BlackBerry Storm

BlackBerry Development Storm

Posted by Sam Churchill on October 8th, 2008

Research In Motion officially announced the BlackBerry Storm today, RIM’s first touchscreen cell phone, designed to compete with the iPhone. Engadget, Phone Scoop and Crackberry have reviews. Verizon Wireless will carry the device as well as Vodafone - so no WiFi.

New developer tools from RIM include a BlackBerry Java Development Environment and desktop simulators for the Storm, Bold and Pearl Flip handsets.

Features and specifications include touch screen, GPS, MicroSD memory slot, camera and video Recording, 528-MHz processor, email for personal and business accounts, instant messaging and text messaging (SMS and MMS), and access to social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace.

According to ABI Research, nearly half of social networking users (46%) have visited a social network on a mobile device. Out of those users, 70% have visited MySpace and 67% have visited Facebook.

In other news, Nuance Communications has announced a deal to provide mobile speech and predictive text capabilities on Nokia devices.

Nokia will license Nuance’s technology and offer open protocols for use by developers. Application creators will be able make use of a series of APIs, language models and other development tools as part of the effort, which is designed to spur innovative products that integrate Nuance’s offerings on Nokia devices, says RCR News.

Mobile players are actively enticing developers to build applications for their platforms. Apple’s iPhone App store showed the way and was followed by Google’s Android, soon to be available on T-Mobile.

WiBro Evolution

WiBro Evolution: Would You Believe 149Mbps?

Posted by Sam Churchill on October 8th, 2008

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in South Korea, and Samsung Electronics announced plans to demonstrate next-generation WiMAX technologies at an upcoming ITU-R conference to be held in Seoul, Korea.

The demonstration will stream HDTV-grade content at over 200 Mbps using a platform called WiBro Evolution.

In July 2004, South Korea’s Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) required a harmonized version of the Korean Wireless Broadband (”WiBro”) standard under the IEEE 802.16e-2005, now a global standard.

Today Samsung is supplying 802.16e-2005 standard gear for Sprint’s Xohm rollout.

Soon, the International Telecommunications Union will define the IMT-Advanced as a “true” 4G standard which is expected to deliver 100Mbps (mobile) and up to 1 Gbps (fixed). Blessing by the ITU will transform a “4G” proposal into an official, international standard.

The WiMax camp (backed by the IEEE) and the LTE camp (backed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project - 3GPP) are now prepping their candidates — 802.16m and LTE-Advanced, respectively.

Key features of ´IMT-Advanced´ (the proposed 4G standard under the ITU), include:

  • a high degree of commonality of functionality worldwide
  • compatibility of services within IMT and with fixed networks
  • capability of interworking with other radio access systems
  • high quality mobile services
  • user equipment suitable for worldwide use
  • user-friendly applications, services and equipment
  • worldwide roaming capability
  • enhanced peak data rates (100 Mbit/s for high and 1 Gbit/s for low mobility).

Cellular operators are extending LTE (not even officially a standard yet) while WiMAX supporters are developing 802.16m. Both want be the ITU’s IMT-Advanced standard.

WiBro Evolution will up the speed to a reported 149 Mbps (down) and 43 Mbps (up). ETRI plans to submit the core capabilities of WiBro Evolution as part of the IEEE 802.16m standard to be completed in 2010.

IMT-Advanced calls for very wide channel widths. The technology needs 40MHz and preferably up to 100MHz channel allocations, says Unstrung. Requirements of that kind are completely new territory for the cellular industry.

The ITU’s proposed IMT-Advanced standard is the brass ring — an opportunity for WiMax and LTE to merge into one integrated ITU “4G” standard. But opinions vary about the likelihood of the two camps blending their rival technologies. Merging cellular’s LTE with Mobile WiMAX for a unified “4G” approach is unlikely at this stage of the game, say some industry players.

Ron Resnick, the president and chairman of the WiMAX Forum, is unequivocal; “They are not going to harmonize,” he said flatly.

Yahoo Stock hits 5 year low

Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang
Internet giant hit by failures, poor economy, falls to lowest trading value since .com bust

Once offered $32/ a share to merge with Microsoft, Jerry Yang's Yahoo Inc. is in financial trouble. The giant's stock closed Thursday at $15.58/share -- a five year low. Not since its meteoric rise and fall with the dot com boom and bust between 1999 to 2001 had its stock traded at such low levels.

While today shares have risen slightly to just over $16/share, they still remain at lows not seen in at least 5 years, leaving Yahoo with very tough questions. The latest fall is just an episode in a steady decline that has been taking place over the last several months.

Yahoo is betting big that its advertising deal with Google will go through, but there's much uncertainty there. The Department of Justice is under pressure to oversee the deal and may nix it, if it feels Google is gaining too much advertising control from it. Further, the deal may fare even worse internationally in places such as the EU, which have stricter antitrust laws.

Outside the advertising deal with Google, Yahoo has relatively little that it can hope will bring the big impact needed for a turnaround. While Google has enough cash to throw millions at wild ideas and spend massive amounts to further its "do no evil" philosophy, Yahoo is struggling just to make ends meet.

Yahoo's search market share, along with Microsoft's, slipped again in the most recent Comscore analysis. Only Google showed gains.

The company has already ruled out a merger. Getting a fair deal from a jilted Microsoft might be hard. And outside Microsoft, there's few that could hope to improve Yahoo's competitive position against Google by an acquisition.

While times are tough, Yahoo continues to plug away at little efforts. It recently launched a new developer platform which it hopes will create some sort of positive change. However, it pulled the plug on other efforts such as its latest attempt at a social network, Yahoo Mash.

One thing Yahoo can be thankful of, at least, is that billionaire investor Carl Icahn has been curiously quiet after investing big in the company, and voicing his intention to speed a sale to Microsoft or someone else. With three board seats at his disposal on Yahoo's 11 person board, Icahn certainly could leverage some kind of influence, possibly demanding CEO Jerry Yang's ouster or a sale. However, if Icahn has any plans for the troubled company, he's keeping remarkably quiet about them.

In the end, Yahoo's key dilemma is that it simply is not as big and does not have as much resources as Google. Google already provides nearly every service Yahoo does, and has the means to implement them better. And Google has name recognition with casual users that Yahoo currently does not.

Perhaps most importantly, advertising, the life blood of the search engine business is now falling even more into Google's hands with Yahoo's advertising pact. All this adds up to a big question for Yahoo -- as its stock and confidence slides, what can it hope to do to stay competitive?

Amazon Kindle 2?

Amazon's Kindle 2 in the wild?

So much for Amazon's attempts to quell Kindle 2 rumors, eh? Talk of a replacement (or a pair of replacements) for Amazon's popular -- but very oddly-styled -- e-reader has been in the mix seemingly since the first model started shipping, and Boy Genius Report has scored shots of something that certainly looks like it could be in the legitimate pipeline. The revised device appears to address complaints over the original's look head-on, rounding the corners and ditching the oddball angles; the scroll wheel has been replaced with a joystick, the SD slot is gone (don't worry, there's at least a gig and a half on-board), and around back, we have grills that seem to suggest integrated stereo speakers. The display is basically the same size -- no color here yet, sorry -- so unless the sharp edges on your first-gen piece are driving you batty, it looks like this could be safely skipped by current owners while roping in new buyers who wouldn't have considered it before. Thing is, was ditching the scroll wheel and that trick mirrored bar in favor of a joystick really the right way to go?

Sony's 18.4" VAIO

Sony's 18.4-inch VAIO VGN-AW190 gets reviewed

Time to face the music, folks -- 18.4-inches is the new 17-inch. Sony's recently unveiled VAIO AW is undoubtedly going toe-to-toe with HP's new HDX 18t, and while both will garner all sorts of stares from onlookers, it appears that the VGN-AW190 may have an edge in terms of extras. For starters, this unit's Adobe RGB-compatible display will be mighty impressive to those who dabble in photos to make ends meet, and the included RAM, CPU and Blu-ray drive were all smiled upon. Strangely enough, Sony tossed in a pathetically slow 4,200RPM hard drive to put a damper on overall performance, but that -- along with the $3k+ sticker -- was the only real weak spot. Overall, critics found that this machine would likely suit graphic designers and photographers quite well, but the average joe / jane may not appreciate the pricey extras enough to make it worthwhile.

EMU for T-Mobile

Emulator gives you the T-Mobile G1 experience now

Yeah, the wait for October 22 (or after) is absolutely excruciating; trust us, we know. We'll take every scrap of information and imagery we can to hold us over until G1s start showing up on doorsteps in a few weeks, but T-Mobile's really gone above and beyond the call of duty here by setting up a surprisingly functional and feature-complete emulator to satisfy our urges to touch icons and click buttons. Obviously, you're not going to get a GPS lock, so don't get your hopes up that you're going to be playing around with Street View or anything wild like that -- in fact, most apps lead you to a "this screen is not fully functional" message -- but it's got more goodies than the Android SDK's emulator, and it's just enough to get you acquainted with the phone's personality by the time it's actually in your paws.
