National ID

National ID, like it or not, is a good thing

I really like Don Tennant's editorial on ID card paranoia. I'm a flag-waving, freedom-loving American, and I also believe ID cards are a good thing; they don't have to be mutually exclusive. There are plenty of other countries where national ID cards are the rule, and I'd venture to say that most of their citizens just take them for granted. Just like driver's licenses are used in the US to help us identify ourselves, ID cards would serve the same purpose. The fact that they'd be mandatory doesn't mean that the government would disabuse them. What exactly do honest, law-abiding citizens think they'd be giving up if they had to carry ID cards? Unless those cards were fitted with some sort of GPS tracking, I hardly think daily activities would be impacted. We have to remember that while we enjoy our freedoms, others with mal-intent can do so also. Personally, I think freedom is a wonderful thing, but free reign is something that we can no longer expect in the US today -- unless we want to live dangerously.
