Google Phone?

Google Phone?

Posted by samc on August 1st, 2007

Engadget says the recent decisions regarding the FCC’s 700MHz frequency auction could have an effect on Google’s desire to bring a WiFi phone to market.

According to sources, a Taiwanese ODM called Wistron NeWeb has entered “design-in development” for phones with Google Talk compatibility. Of course, we’ve heard similar rumors before, but the company already makes Skype phones, so moving the technology to Google’s implementation of VoIP would be easy as pie — and who doesn’t like pie?

A Dual-band WiFi/700MHz phone may eventually be produced, but other combinations would probably come first. Those might include a WiFi/Cellular phone (for cable operators), a Cellular/Mobile WiMAX (for Sprint), or a Mobile WiMax/WiFi handset (for Clearwire).

Will Apple allow their iPhone to be used on Sprint’s Mobile WiMAX network? Two possible additions to the iPhone family include a cheaper $349 to $399 model, possibly by Christmas, and a faster 3G phone sometime next year.

Boingo Wireless today announced that iPhone owners can enjoy free Wi-Fi as they travel for business or pleasure through 13 North American airports during the month of August. The airports include Baltimore/Washington, Detroit, JFK, Kalamazoo/Battle Creek, LaGuardia, Lambert-St. Louis, Midway (Chicago), Minneapolis-St. Paul, Nashville, Newark, O’Hare, Toronto, and Will Rogers (Oklahoma City).
