Google Hotspot

Google Hotpot: Mobile Geo Social

Posted by Sam Churchill on November 16th, 2010
Google Maps on Android just added a new local recommendation engine calledHotpot that helps you discover places based on opinions from you and your friends. It joins Google Places with Google Profiles to provide more accurate recommendations.
You can write and publish ratings and reviews from your mobile phone. A new rating widget can be nstalled from your homescreen by going to Menu > Add > Widgets > Rate Places. You can also post ratings and reviews directly from any Place page. When you add friends to the mix using Hotpot on your computer, your ratings will assist them (and visa-versa).
  • Google Places. These are the 50 million places around the world for which Google has rich details.
  • The places you like. When you rate places you like, Google will tell you about other related places you’ll probably like.
  • The places your friends like. Share your ratings with your friends and see the places they’ve recommended.
Google says iPhone users will also have a Places app soon that allows you to rate and get place recommendations as well.
Google will likely make money through location-based advertising on Hotpot.
Geosocial networking applications allow users to interact relative to their current locations. They include FoursquareGowalla and YelpFacebook announced Placeson August 18, 2010. It lets users “check in” to Facebook using a mobile device to let a user’s friends know where they are at and lets merchants offer deals to people who electronically “check in”.
The problem with Hotpot — besides the confusing name — is that for it to really work well, your friends must be interested in setting up Google profiles.

Re: Google Hotpot
I think it's great and easy to use. I like the name. It's helpful to find hotspots. It's like a melting pot with it's variety of uses. But mostly I use it for restaurants, so I think of a big hot pot of food! Yum! Somebody was using their imagination.
