Netbooks outsell iPhone

Netbooks Outsell iPhone

Posted by Sam Churchill on December 10th, 2008

Netbooks are now more popular than the iPhone, says the Washington Post. In recent months the form factor has become so popular sales figures are rivaling Apple’s iPhone, according to sales data.

The latest smartphone sales numbers from market researcher Gartner says 4.7 million iPhones were shipped in Q3 2008.

By comparison netbook sales numbers from DisplaySearch in Q# show 5.6 million netbooks were sold in the same period.

Momentum within the industry currently favors mini-note PCs, says DisplaySearch. But this segment of the notebook PC market is still quite new and most of the brands are still fine-tuning their mini-note PC marketing and product strategies.

Many people who don’t need a fully fledged laptop are going for netbooks to serve their websurfing needs, says the Washington Post. On the other hand, many buy iPhones for the multimedia capabilities combined with a phone and for mobile email and browsing the web - things that netbooks do quite well also.
