Novatel Mi-Fi: Battery Powered Mobile Router
Posted by Sam Churchill on December 9th, 2008Novatel’s Mi-Fi is a battery operated device that connects to either an EV-DO Rev. A or HSPA signal and then shares its connection via Wi-Fi. Novatel says it will deliver four hours of continuous use per charge, or forty hours on standby.
Novatel says it can simply be put down, turned on, and connected. The device has a built-in processor with Linux-based OS, which can run various applications, including security programs, VPNs, and drivers for home appliances. The device will cost “under $200″ when it debuts in the first half of 2009. Novatel already supplies 3G cards for Verizon, Sprint, Telefonica, and Vodafone.
Novatel Wireless’ CEO Peter Leparulo said, “Our carrier partners will now be able to provide new wireless solutions and bundles for consumer and enterprise users. This will contribute to the continued growth of the addressable broadband market.”
CradlePoint’s PHS300 (above), does essentially the same thing, using both broadband-enabled cellular phones and modems for the backhaul. 3G Mobile Routers let you take WiFi with you.
